Lady Marauders Overcome Fourth Quarter Deficit
< < Back to lady-marauders-overcome-fourth-quarter-deficitHeading into the fourth quarter, the Lady Marauders (9-11) found themselves down 36-28. After a pep talk from head coach Scott Cleland, Meigs took over outscoring Wellston (1-19) 21-4 in the fourth for a 49-40 victory. The Marauders also switched to a man-to-man defense that forced 25 Lady Golden Rockets turnovers.
Early in the game, Wellston simply out hustled Meigs, grabbing countless offensive rebounds and bodying Meigs down low. The combination of Alexis Green and Kaylee Taynor proved too much for Meigs to handle early as they used their size to get open and grab boards.
“I just told them during the timeout that it was gut check time, that we needed to stop playing lazy and back on our heels and play with some heart and some guts,” Cleland said.
The switch in defenses allowed Meigs to convert its forced turnovers into buckets, attacking the basket and creating easy layups. The constant pressure created a pace that Wellston was unable to keep up with, leading to Wellston to foul multiple times. The Lady Marauders took advantage of this, shooting 11 for 14 on the night.
The main catalysts for the fourth quarter comeback for Meigs were Kassidy Betzing and Madison Fields. The two guards were all of the court disrupting Wellston’s offensive flow. Fields who had six steals to go along with her 14 points. Betzing on the other hand was huge on the glass, grabbing nine boards and leading the team with 15 points.
The Lady Marauders travel to Jackson on Feb. 4, with Wellston hosting Alexander the same night as well.
