Lady Lancers Struggle With Shooting Against Southern

A fourth-quarter collapse, in which Southern (14-6) outscored Federal Hocking (5-16) 13 to 6, allowed the Lady Tornadoes to wiggle past the Lady Lancers 41-30. Seven of the 13 points came from the free-throw line.
“At times we got lazy and used our hands and not our feet,” coach Jeremy Tolson said. “Towards the end the free throws were the difference.”
Despite only being down only four points at the end of the third quarter, the Lady Lancers didn’t score until halfway through the final quarter. The team also had trouble grabbing any offensive rebounds.
“We were trying to get the ball to the rim, we wanted them to make them work on defense but we didn’t shoot very well tonight.” Tolson said.
Southern’s defense forced Fed Hock to settle for perimeter shots throughout the first half; the Lady Lancers shot 3 for 19 from behind the arc. However, their defense competed well, allowing Fed Hock to disrupt passing lanes. It made it nearly impossible for Southern to move the ball inside.
“Our defense was good tonight, we did what we needed to do,” Tolson said. “Our post stepped up and played very very well underneath.”
Federal Hocking came out strong in the second half with an eight to two run where all four baskets came from in the paint. Although the Lady Lancers began to find their offense in the third quarter, they were unable to grab any offensive rebounds or reach the free throw line until the fourth quarter.
The Lady Lancers finish their season Feb. 2 on the road against Berne Union. Southern plays its final game at home on Feb. 4 against Wahama.
