Marshall Faculty Stand Against Concealed Carry On Campus

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) — The Marshall University Faculty Senate has taken a stand against a piece of state legislation that would allow licensed citizens to carry a concealed gun on college campuses.
The Herald-Dispatch reports that the senate on Thursday voted to stand in opposition to House Bill 2446, which social psychology professor Paige Muellerleile says would only increase the likelihood of violence.
Five other professors also spoke out against the bill, voicing concerns over student suicide rates and guns in residence halls and sorority or fraternity houses.
Leadership professor Tom Hisiro spoke in favor of the bill, saying having people carrying firearms could prevent a crisis.
The senate voted to support a bill that would increase the excise tax on soft drinks and dedicate 75 percent of the proceeds to higher education institutions.
