A state legislative panel approved payment of damages to Darrell Houston to compensate for money he would have earned had he not been incarcerated.
Houston was found guilty of aggravated murder by the Cuyahoga County Common Pleas Court in 1992 but new evidence determined his innocence in 2007.
Daniel Borchert, interim clerk of the Ohio Court of Claims, said Houston is owed the money under state law.
"This is a person who was convicted of a crime that they did not commit. The state of Ohio compensates wrongfully imprisoned individuals with money damages," Borchert said.
