BOYS

The Athens Bulldogs set foot in the LeBron James Arena on Jan. 10, hoping to capture the biggest non-conference win of the season. Although the St. Vincent-St. Mary Fighting Irish came out on top with a 10-point lead, the Athens Bulldogs fought hard and stood strong with a final score of 67-57.

The Athens star quarterback Joe Burrow turned into a star ball player Friday night when he led the Athens Bulldogs with 15 points and 10 rebounds. However, not far behind was freshman Griffin Lutz with 14 points and 6 rebounds.

There is a lot to be said about defensive standout junior Adam Leuerhman who came out shining with 5 blocks regardless of a hit to the face resulting in an episode of epistaxis. This loss placed the Athens Bulldogs 8-3 and 4-0 in conference play.

On Saturday Jan. 11, the Athens Bulldogs faced a non-league challenge against the visiting Valley Indians. Supporters jumped out of their seats for an intense double overtime. The Bulldogs managed to pull away from the Indians with a final score of 77-71.

Athens (9-3) remains on the road as they head to Jackson to battle the Ironmen in another non-conference game on Tuesday, January 14th. The Ironmen are expected to put up a big fight, in hopes of getting their first win, and dent their 0-12 record.

GIRLS

After the anticipated game against the Warren Warriors got cancelled due to inclement weather, the Athens Lady Bulldogs looked to keep their undefeated season with a win against the Alexander Spartans.

It turns out that Alexander was not ready for the heat that the Athens Lady Bulldogs brought to Albany on Jan. 9. Athens took the victory by a 27-point margin, 62-35 allowing them to remain undefeated.

There was no doubt that the Athens defense secured the win against Alexander.

Junior Olivia Harris relentlessly defended freshman guard Leah Richardson, who was Alexander’s high scorer for the game. Athens was able to hold Alexander to only 9 points in the third quarter, which allowed them to get away with such a large lead.

In addition, offensive force Dominique Doseck came out guns blazing at halftime with 15 points in the quarter, including 8 straight points.

The season is looking promising for the Athens Lady Bulldogs. Their continuous aggression and unwavering defense may be what it takes to win in the TVC-Ohio.

However the Athens Lady Bulldogs have yet to step on court with their biggest competitors. The Warren, Jackson and Vinton County games will be a true indicator of just how far Athens can take it.

Athens looks to keep the momentum going when they travel to Meigs to finish up a five game road streak on Monday, Jan. 13.
