Late Free Throws Push Athens Past N-Y
< < Back to late-free-throws-push-athens-past-n-yThe Athens Lady Bulldogs and Nelsonville-York Lady Buckeyes clashed for the second time this year in a Bulldogs 54-45 win. The two teams met over a month ago, with the Bulldogs sinking the Buckeyes in that contest as well. The Bulldogs used a strong night from versatile forward Hannah DeBruin, who cleaned up the boards and finished at the free throw line to help accumulate 15 points.
Debruin was set up by guard Dominique Doseck, who once again didn’t lead the team in scoring, but continued to lead the team with the ball in her hands.
“Dominique is so valuable with the ball in her hands,” head coach Wayne Horsley said. “She doesn’t need to score a lot of points to be valuable to this team. Other teams are aware of her and that’s a good thing because it opens up some of our other players.” Doseck finished the game with 14 points. She also had a team-high 6 assists.
Rounding out the Bulldogs scoring were veterans Elise Lutz, Olivia Harris and Racheal Gilkey, as the three combined to score 23 points.
Nelsonville-York seemed to be running out of time, down by 14 points in the waning moments of the third quarter, and Athens continuing to pick up steam. Madison Davis led the surge for the Lady Bucks, picking up crucial baskets in the final period helping her pick up a double-double. Davis finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman Samantha Taylor used hot shooting to reach double figures as well, finishing with 10 points.
With the game winding down, Athens sunk big free throws to preserve the 54-45 win.
The Bulldogs remain undefeated and have huge tests in the upcoming weeks, with road tests at Jackson and Warren, who are looking to halt the Bulldogs’ win streak.
The Buckeyes’ loss snaps a six-game win streak. A big test awaits N-Y, facing a grudge match in the next few weeks with Vinton County.
