The Ohio University Graduate College, Kennedy Lecture Series, Athena Cinema and Arts for Ohio will present a free screening of the Stanley Kubrick science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The exclusive showing, which is part of the Science on Screen series funded by the Sloan Foundation, will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at the Athena Cinema.

Released in 1968, the Academy Award-winning movie deals with a series of encounters between humans and mysterious black monoliths that are changing human evolution. Notable for its scientific accuracy, the film deals with elements of not only evolution, but also technology, artificial intelligence and extraterrestrial life.

Written and directed by Stanley Kubrick, 2001: A Space Odyssey also is known for its pioneering special effects and imagery, and its compelling depiction of man versus machine.

"2001: A Space Odyssey challenged our understanding of how technology would change the future. Decades later, we still question how technology will affect mankind," said David Koonce, associate dean of the Graduate College. "For those who haven't seen the film, I look forward to the discussion it engenders. And for those who have, I know it will still leave you thinking."

The film will be introduced by John Gurche, a paleo-artist whose lifelike reconstructions of our humanoid ancestors have appeared on the cover of National Geographic, at the Smithsonian, the Field Museum and the American Museum of Natural History.
