Spellacy’s Hat Trick Leads Ohio Over Kent State

The ice at Bird Arena seemed to be waiting for freshman Patrick Spellacy Friday.
From the very moment Spellacy stepped on the ice to the last few seconds of the game, he showed the Kent State Golden Flashes what they were in for. Scoring three goals for the Bobcats, Spellacy earned a hat trick – his last goal his 20th of the season.
The Bobcats defeated the Golden Flashes 7-0 and left the Gang Green and all of its fans with smiles on their faces.
It started with a goal by Spellacy within the first five minutes of the game. The Bobcats came out strong in the second period with Spellacy again scoring a top-shelf goal for Ohio just five minutes into the period. On the assist were Brett Agnew and Matt Hartman.
Not even a minute later, Hartman scored his sixth goal of the season with assists by Spellacy and Agnew.
The Bobcats soon gained control on a power play with six minutes left in the game, and Garrett Williams went to score a top-shelf goal for his tenth of the season.
The second period came to a close, and the Bobcats seemed to have the game almost won, but 4-0 wasn’t enough for them. With 14 minutes left in the third period, Spellacy completed the hat trick with Brett Agnew and Tom Whetsel on the assist.
With just four minutes left in the third period, a power play opportunity arose for the Bobcats yet again. Agnew slapped one into the net making the score 6-0 Bobcats. Mike Kretz soon followed with his 11th goal of the season to hand the Bobcats 7-0 win.
Goalie Ryan Heltion was mentioned as the No. 2 star of the game for his 13 saves in the shutout. Spellacy and Agnew were also named stars of the game.
“Tomorrow’s game is going to be a lot harder than tonight’s game because a lot of times when teams have a great win, their focus tends to lack the next game,” head coach Jonathon Sheridan said. “Tomorrow, Kent State is going to come out strong with something to prove, and we need to be ready.”
Saturday, the Bobcats will take on the Golden Flashes one more time at Bird Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
