The Vinton County Lady Vikings put on a defensive clinic at Meigs Friday night as they defeated the Lady Marauders 61-22.
Vinton County’s defensive pressure caused all kinds of issues for the Lady Marauders. The Lady Vikings’ use of on-ball defense instigated turnovers, and Vinton County converted those turnovers into points early in the game and never looked back. Forward Michaela Puckett led the stingy Lady Viking defense with three steals.
The Lady Vikings were clicking on all cylinders, as well. Guard Jamee Park led the team with 18 points, followed by a strong 16 point, four rebound outing by forward Jalen Hale. The two shot a combined 14 of 18 from the floor.
Meigs was not as efficient, however. The Lady Marauders forced many of their shots, and the result was a 21 percent field goal percentage. Kelsey Hudson had a particularly tough night for Meigs, scoring only eight points on 18 shots.
The Vinton County Lady Vikings will look to continue rolling as they take on Marietta on Saturday, Feb. 8.
BOYS
The Vinton County Vikings outlasted a physical Meigs Marauders team 56-45 in the second game of a girls-boys doubleheader on Friday night.
After leading by only five points entering the second half, the Vikings used a combination of 3-pointers and defense to open the third quarter with a 14-5 run. The team combined for seven three point field goals in total, and nine of Alex Owings’ 17 points were from beyond the arc.
Meigs opened the game with energy that was not there for the Vikings, and the team pulled in four offensive rebounds in the first quarter alone. Their 10-5 first quarter lead would quickly evaporate, however, as Vinton County began matching the Marauders’ energy.
The Marauders slowly crawled back within reach in the fourth quarter when forward Damon Jones began hitting shots that were not falling in the first half. He cut the lead to 36-27, but the two teams traded shots for the final seven minutes of the game. Jones finished with 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals for Meigs.
The Vinton County Vikings will travel to Logan to face the Chieftains on Saturday, Feb. 8. The first meeting scheduled for Feb. 4 between the two teams was postponed.
