Oklahoma Lays Boom on Bobcats

It was a battle between the OU schools Friday night and the Oklahoma Sooners (8-1) defeated the Ohio Bobcats (3-6) in straight sets (25-12, 25-19, 25-18).
A Jaime Kosiorek kill made it a 10-8 lead for the Oklahoma Sooners in the first set. The Bobcats were getting their hands on balls and passing well but then it all unraveled. Stephanie Olman missed the next serve for Ohio and it sparked a 7-0 run by Oklahoma, who led 17-8 and forced Ohio to call a timeout. Ali Lake had three kills in the next six points but Ohio trailed 20-11 and called their final timeout. Back-to-back kills by Alyssa Enneking helped put the game away for the Sooners.
“Going into a match like this, playing against a big team we need to know that they are a team that can compete with us and we can’t be scared,” Brooke Coleman said. “At the beginning of this game we started playing scared.”
Ohio made a change at the setter position to begin the second set when Katelyn Burke replaced Olman. A Mallory Salis service error (one of eight in the game for Ohio) gave Oklahoma a 10-4 lead. A 7-3 run by the Bobcats made it a 13-11 deficit. The two teams traded points until an error by Kosiorek gave Oklahoma a 16-14 lead. But that is as close as Ohio got. The Sooners put the game away with a 9-5 run. Ohio had 11 errors in the set.
The third set was a lot like the second one. Oklahoma got out to a 10-3 lead thanks to two kills from Enneking and three from Kimmy Gardiner. Back-to-back kills by Gardiner extended the lead to 10 (18-8). Ohio managed to score 1o of the final 17 points thanks to two kills by Lizzie Stephens but the comeback fell short and the Sooners took the set and the match.
Lake continued her efficient play with 10 kills on 21 swings. Coleman added a match high 14 digs. Enneking, Gardiner and Marion Hazelwood had double digit kills for the Sooners.
Up next for the Bobcats is the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) at 11 a.m. on Saturday. UTSA is 2-0 in the Nike Invitational, including an upset of Oklahoma on Thursday.
