Video Surveillance Malfunctions
< < Back to video-surveillance-malfunctionsVideo surveillance helps catch criminals.
But only if the cameras are turned on.
Three years ago, The Police Department installed cameras at the city parking garage on East Washington.
The crime was too high.
According to police, after one year with the cameras, the crime rate dropped by about half.
However, it has been a number of weeks since the camera system has worked properly.
“We had a situation a couple weeks ago when one of the cameras was malfunctioning. And a persons car was vandalized I believe,” Chief of Police Tom Pyle said.
That is a scary prospect as people come into town for Halloween.
“Right now we are in the process of replacing a lot of cameras with better cameras. It's a pretty wide view. The cameras that we are installing have a better resolution also have infra red which should improve the quality of video we get,” Pyle said.
Pyle forecasts that the cameras will be fixed by the end of the week.
