HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) – West Virginia Gov.-elect Jim Justice has told a conference focused on long-term recovery from last summer’s devastating flooding that he plans to restore hope and opportunities in the state.

Justice was the keynote speaker Friday at an economic conference that drew speakers from government, business, higher education and nonprofit groups.

Justice, who will be inaugurated on Monday, offered no specific plans to move the state past the floods. He told several dozen people at Marshall University that “it’s time to drag ourselves out of this mess.”

The June floods killed 23 people and destroyed or damaged thousands of homes, businesses, roads and bridges.

The group West Virginia Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster co-hosted the conference.

A similar conference is scheduled at West Virginia University this spring.
