Coming Weeks Bring Music, Theatre, Classic Films To Peoples Bank Theatre
< < Back to ?p=180284The historic Peoples Bank Theatre in downtown Marietta has a wide variety of musicians on its calendar for the remainder of February and the month ahead, as well as a staged reading and a selection of classic
films.
On Friday, Feb. 24 at 8 p.m. Peoples Bank Theatre welcomes the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra to the stage. Tickets are $18-30.
The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is recognized as one of the best all-around dance bands. Tommy Dorsey, “The Sentimental Gentleman of Swing,” was a master at creating warm, sentimental and always musical moods at superb dancing and listening tempos. Tommy sustained these moods through the arrangements of the likes of Paul Weston, Axel Stordahl and Sy Oliver, and he showcased singers who could project them brilliantly.
On Thursday, March 16 at 7 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre partners with the Mid-Ohio Valley Blues, Jazz, & Folk Music Society to present multi-Grammy Award winning artist Delbert McClinton. Marietta College
music student and rising blues guitar phenom Sadie Johnson will open the concert. Tickets are $26-$38.
McClinton’s Jan. 27 release (and his 19th album to-date) , Prick Of The Litter blends his signature rhythm and blues sound with a newer jazz-influence inspired by Johnny Mercer, Nat King Cole and other
legendary crooners. McClinton’s road band, Self-Made Men provide a hard-driving rhythm section, powerful guitars and innovative piano, accented by punched-up horns.
McClinton has been a leading Americana artist since before the genre was established. He has won two Grammy awards in the blues category for Best Contemporary Blues Album, as well as one in the rock category (Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group), with Bonnie Raitt for “Good Man, Good Woman.”
The following night, Friday, March 17 at 8 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with the Celtic roots music of Runa. Tickets are $15-$30.
Quickly gaining recognition as one of Irish music’s new “super-groups”, Runa has been pushing the boundaries of Irish folk music since their formation in 2008. Interweaving the haunting melodies and exuberant
tunes of Ireland and Scotland with the lush harmonies and rhythms of bluegrass, flamenco, blues, jazz, they offer a redefining take on traditional music. The group has been honored internationally, winning
Top Group and Top Traditional Group in the Irish Music Awards and an Independent Music Award for Best World/Traditional Song.
On Friday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m., Peoples Bank Theatre and Hipp Stage Productions presents a stage reading of the 2013 Tony Award-winning comedy, Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. Tickets are $10.
Even after the passing of their parents, middle-aged siblings Vanya and Sonia have never left the confines of their childhood home in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, while their sister Masha has been gallivanting
around the world as a successful actress. A surprise visit from Masha and her 20-something boy toy, Spike, throws the normally quiet household into utter upheaval as its residents and visitors get swept up in an
intoxicating mixture of rivalry, regret, and the sudden possibility of escape.
The stage reading will feature the talents of Marietta and Parkersburg area actors, including David Rexrode, Debbie Lawson, Karen Paskawych, Jeff Dye, Sara Saho, and Heather Hepburn.
On the big screen, Peoples Bank Theatre is continuing its series of Golden Anniversary films from 1967.
