Over the past few seasons it feels as though the Convocation Center at Ohio University has become Vinton County’s second home. The Vikings are once again Convo bound after they defeated the Marietta Tigers 75-62.

The path back to the Convo got off to a fast start as Vinton County jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and connected on their first five field goals. Early and-ones from Jake Speakman and shots from Naylan Yates would get the Vikings out to a lead they would never relinquish. The hot start didn’t last, though, as after one Marietta closed the gap to 14-9 as they held Viking senior Derick Jones scoreless in the quart and slowed down Tristan Bartoe.

The second quarter proved to be a more edgy affair as the Tigers were able to connect on a plethora of threes to keep the score within one possession for most of the quarter. Vinton County would go on an 8-2 run to close out the half and take a 34-22 lead into the locker room.

The second half was all Vikings as the maroon and white would quickly open up a 15 point lead that Marietta could not cut to single digits for the rest of the night. The Vikings were able to put in almost their entire bench by the games end and give Tristan Bartoe and Derick Jones crucial rest for their district semifinal matchup.

Tristan Bartoe would record a double-double for the Vikings finishing with 24 points and 14 rebounds while Derick Jones would add 19 points and 8 rebounds. Marietta was led by 16 points from senior Isaac Danford who was the go to player all night for the Tigers. An area of concern for the Vikings going forward has to be turnovers. The Vikings turned the ball over 26 times. While it did not affect the Vikings all too much tonight, as they get deeper into the tournament the will have to take better care of the rock.

Vinton County moves on to the district semi-finals where the will meet the Waverly Tigers on Saturday at 7pm at the Convocation Center at Ohio University.
