The School of Art + Design proudly presents “Gibas Aeronautics,” a graduate thesis exhibition by Amy Gibas, April 25-29 at the Ohio University Art Gallery in Athens, OH.

An artist lecture will take place on Thursday, April 27 at 4:15 p.m. in Mitchell Auditorium, located within Seigfred Hall, followed by an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the gallery.

In 2015, Amy Gibas founded Gibas Aeronautics. The artist’s work begins with a participatory performance in which assistants help to launch and recover helium-powered weather balloons carrying a camera and GPS device. The mission is a journey of collective effort and the exploration brings people together around a common purpose and sense of connection to the universe.

The exhibition, “Gibas Aeronautics,” includes the evidence of these events, including research disseminated through verbal storytelling, recorded video, photos and painted images. Within this broader context, the audience outside of the performance also is able to contemplate questions of their own relationship within the astronomical universe.

Gibas is currently a graduate student in the Painting + Drawing program at the Ohio University School of Art + Design pursuing her Master of Fine Arts degree. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Saginaw Valley State University in Saginaw, Michigan in 2014.
