Mike Philipps is retiring as the president and CEO of the Scripps Howard Foundation but he still has strong opinions about what makes good modern-day journalism education.

He has been with the Foundation since 2007.

Philipps heads a foundation that invests heavily in schools of journalism and communication colleges across the country – including the E. W. Scripps School of Journalism and the Scripps College of Communication at Ohio University.

While Philipps is laudatory of Ohio University’s programs, he claims that some schools he has visited are not as forward-looking.

He says that communication programs must keep abreast of the rapidly changing media landscape and must be cross-disciplinary.

He candidly stated his positions and shared his views as he talked with WOUB’s Tom Hodson. Philipps was on campus for the 9th annual Scripps Day, a day when executives from the E. W. Scripps Company and the Scripps Howard Foundation visit campus to exchange ideas with faculty and students.
