Preview: Wellston To Face Conference’s Best Offense In Athens
< < Back to preview-wellston-face-conferences-best-offense-athensThe Athens Bulldogs (7-0, 3-0) have taken a liking to playing TVC-Ohio defense, having outscored conference foes 165-23.
The Bulldogs’ defense shares a similar sentiment about the league’s offenses. Even after giving up 42 points to out-of-conference foe Steubenville, Athens was able to right the ship the following week against Meigs, shutting out the Marauders in a 49-0 drubbing in week seven.
Trae Williams led the offense with 171 yards and four touchdowns on the ground. He has accumulated 23 touchdowns through seven games and currently leads the state in rushing touchdowns.
Meanwhile, his backfield companion Joe Burrow is fourth in the state in passing with 2,142 yards.
Williams, Burrow and the high-octane Athens offense won’t be a welcome sight for the Wellston Golden Rockets (3-4, 1-2). Wellston has given up a combined 80 points through three conference games.
Despite a shaky 2-3 start to the season, Wellston may have turned a corner. The Golden Rockets beat River Valley in week 6 and dropped a close game to Nelsonville-York last week where they held Buckeye quarterback Hunter Edwards to only 86 yards. Edwards mustered up only one completion in the second half.
Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 from The Plains.
