Belpre Edges Federal Hocking In Final Seconds
< < Back to ?p=21198A tied score board with 13 seconds left in the game left the Federal Hocking Lady Lancers (1-3, 1-2 TVC-Hocking) fighting hard to win over the Belpre Golden Eagles (4-1, 3-1) until fouls caused the game to end with the Lady Lancers losing at home, 57-59.
The Lady Lancers trailed behind most of the game, having a hard time keeping up with the Golden Eagles’ quick defense and strong offense. The Golden Eagles were led by senior Sierra Barker scoring 17 points and Hannah Lawrentz with 10 points. Lawrentz forced turnovers, stealing the ball from the Lady Lancers five times during the second half of the game.
Belpre’s coach Chris Murray cheered from the sidelines while his team moved quick to get their hands around the ball. Murray used to coach the Federal Hocking boys basketball team and was happy with his success in Stewart.
“It was a very good homecoming with a win,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Lancers were looking to pick up their second conference win but sloppy passing led to multiple turnovers. Missed free throws hurt the team’s chance to even out the score in the contest. Destiny Tabler led the Lancers with 24 points followed by Megan Thompson with 15 points.
Thompson tried to get the Lady Lancers’ momentum going at the beginning of the game but couldn’t keep up with the Golden Eagles’ speed.
“I think we started off a little slow, we get in these situations at the end of the game where it gets really close and then we crank it up,” she said.
The heat began to rise at the two-minute mark in the fourth quarter when the Lancers were behind by just three points. The Lancers had the opportunity to tie the game up with free throws but was unable to make the shots.
The game continued until Destiny Tabler tied up the game with a 3-pointer with just 13 seconds left. Fouls took away the crowds’ roar when Barker from made two free throws with only two seconds in the game, taking the victory.
Lady Lancer coach Jeremy Tolson said that his team needs to focus on putting all of their energy into all four quarters of the game, not just finishing strong.
The Lady Lancers continue on to play the Waterford Lady Wildcats at home on Monday, Dec. 15.
The Lady Golden Eagles will also be back in action Dec. 15, when they take on the Wahama Lady White Falcons.
