Ohio Wrestling: Ohio begins season with loss against Campbell
< < Back to ohio-wrestling-ohio-begins-season-with-loss-against-campbellFor the third year in a row, the Ohio wrestling team started off the season with a dual meet loss. The Bobcats lost to Campbell University 19-13 on Saturday. Ohio won only four-out-of-10 matches in the away match.
The Bobcats started off strong with two wins at 157 and 165 pounds. Junior Nick Vestal won 6-3 over Matthew Dellara. True freshman Colt Yinger followed with a major decision against Cameron Pine. With a score of 16-6, Yinger scored the most points in the dual meet — he tallied a total of five takedowns.
However, Campbell came back the next three matches. Ohio’s 174-pounder, Joe Terry, lost in a major decision 8-0 to Andrew Morgan. At 184, junior Hunter Yeargan was unable to hold off Campbell’s Chris Kober in the third period. Kober had a late takedown giving him the 8-6 win. Campbell was able to win another close match at 197 pounds. Austin McNeill defeated Ohio’s sophomore Aaron Naples 5-3.
Ohio almost lost another match with poor third period management. Heavyweight Zack Parker won 9-6 over Campbell’s Odgerel Batkhishig. In the first two periods, Parker was dominant and led 6-1. Then, the referee gave three stalling calls on Parker. 285 pounds wasn’t the only weight class where Ohio had a stall call against them. Over half of the Bobcats had a stall warning.
125-pounder Shakur Laney was one of those wrestlers. In his first dual meet since redshirting, Laney lost to Korbin Meink 4-1 after giving up a takedown in the third period.
In the 133-pound match, Ohio’s Mario Guillen tied up the team score at 13-13. Guillen won a close match of 4-3 against Campbell’s Noah Gonser.
But the Hagan brothers were unable to finish it up for the Bobcats. Kyran Hagan lost at 141 pounds 8-2 against Nathan Boston. In the 149-pound match, Alec Hagan lost to Josh Heil by the same score.
The Bobcats travels to Annapolis, Maryland next week to compete in the Navy Classic. On November 30th, Ohio will have its next dual meet at Appalachian State. The team will not return to the Convocation Center until December 20th.
