Swank received 184, or nearly two-thirds, of the 282 votes cast. Swank moves on to the general election in November and is all but certain to claim the council seat given there was no Republican in the primary.
Swank is a longtime Athens resident who taught for years at Athens High School. He currently serves as vice president of the Far East Side Neighborhood Association and as chair of the city’s Recreation Advisory Board.
Swank said during his campaign that if elected he would focus on fiscal responsibility and affordable housing, particularly for the city’s elderly population.
Just over 39 percent of the registered Democrats in the 4th Ward cast votes in the primary.
