This Saturday’s “Out of the Afternoon” will feature a focus on trombonist-composer Julian Priester. Chicago born, Priester attended DuSable High School under tutelage of the legendary Capt. Walter Dyett.
Priester began his musical career as a member of Sun Ra’s Arkestra, moving on to work with Lionel Hampton and Dinah Washington, before joining Max Roach’s ensemble featuring Abbey Lincoln.
Throughout the 60s Priester was first-call trombonist for numerous recordings before joining the famous Mwandishi ensemble of Herbie Hancock.
Following this tenure he continued as a freelance artist before becoming a faculty member of Cornish College in Seattle where he recorded with faculty members Jay Clayton and Gary Peacock, as well as with former students.
Julian Priester celebrated his 86th birthday June 29.
