The first period came with quick action from Ohio as Drew Maygar got things started with a goal three minutes and 42 seconds in. A fast start has been a key part of Ohio’s success so far this season and tonight was an example of just that.
“It has been our identity this year,” coach Lionel Mauron said. “We just have great leaders that get everybody ready, and we want to take a head start and control the game from there.”
Although Roosevelt was able to respond to the first goal scored, Ohio found plenty of chances to make plays happen and were able to score two more goals with one coming from Nick Carretta and another from Sam Turner in the first period. Roosevelt was only able to respond to two of the goals from Ohio in the first period and from there on out the puck was all the Bobcats.
The second period came with three more goals from Ohio, one of which was a second goal of the night for Carretta. Carretta has had to put in a fair share of work including an injury that set him back and playing on the division two teams for years which helped him to get to the place he is.
“It’s just battling through adversity for years,” Mauron said. “He gets rewarded for it because he’s a great person and we are so lucky to have him in the room.”
It has been a journey for Carretta but it’s certainly one that has led him to the success he is having. For him to be able to score multiple goals combined this weekend had an impact on him personally.
“It meant a lot,” Nick Carretta said. “It’s been a lot of hard work especially since last year whenever I got hurt.”
After the Bobcats came into the third period ahead 6-2 they were able to score two more goals to get the six-point lead to seal the victory. There wasn’t much action other than the two goals as Roosevelt failed to find success to get in the net and score.
Ohio looks to continue its winning ways as it hosts Iowa State next Friday and Saturday with both games starting at 7 p.m.
