ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — The Alexander Varsity Boys Soccer Team (8-5-3) found themselves on top after an 8 goal thriller ending at 6-2 against the Miami Trace Panthers (6-9-3).

After coming off a hard fought 4-2 loss against Unioto (16-1) the Spartans looked to bounce back in their first sectional tournament match.

It was a cold and windy night for both teams, but Alexander kept the heat the whole match with a dominant team display.

Senior Kyler D’Augustino was the first to find himself on the scoresheet after two back-to-back goals early in the first half. This was a huge milestone for his career as he secured his 100th and 101st goals, making him Alexander’s highest scorer in both soccer and basketball.

However, he said these personal achievements aren’t getting to his head.

“Honestly, I wasn’t really thinking too much about that,” he said. “I’m just trying to keep winning, keep going farther in the tournament like I have (in) previous years… It’s more of a team thing than a personal thing.”

That statement would show to be true as there was a different goal scorer for every other Alexander goal.

Only a few minutes later, Senior Dylan Allison would find the back of the net after getting to the end of a low driven cross from the left wing.

Alexander would wrap up the half with a secure 4-0 lead. Their fourth goal came from Freshman Jake Rousch, who fired a rocketing half-volley into the top of the goal after a free kick ended up near the edge of Miami Trace’s goal box.

Unfortunately for the Panthers, the Spartans weren’t satisfied with a four-goal lead.

After receiving the ball from Augustino down the right end of the wing, Senior Tyler Brooks would be the next Spartan to find himself on the scoresheet with a swift cross that would end up fooling the keeper and sliding in the top left corner.

Even though the Panthers were getting thrashed on the scoresheet, they still worked hard to try and steal the ball to break through the defense and attempt a comeback.

However, the Panthers would fight a little too aggressively, and a foul on Ethan Neidhart would place the Spartans in another scoring position with a set piece 25 yards from the goal.

After being fouled, Neidhart would courageously step up to take the free kick, and confidently finesse the ball over the keeper and into the back of the net, establishing a mountainous 6-0 lead for the Spartans.

The Panthers would finally find themselves on the score sheet, making it 6-1 with a penalty in the second half after a rough tackle in Alexander’s box.

This goal would spark hope in the Panther’s hearts, but they would only find themselves grabbing one more consultation goal with less than a minute in the game.

The match ended 6-2, meaning Miami Trace’s tournament hopes and season ended.

The Spartans move on in the tournament to face the Unioto Shermans, who they had just previously lost to in the match before the 6-2 win. They look to turn the result around and get their revenge in the rematch.
