Voters Will Decide Vacant House Seat
< < Back to voters-will-decide-vacant-house-seatThere is still nobody representing residents of the 87th House District in Ohio and the position will remain vacant for awhile longer.
Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder says a permanent appointment won't be made until after the March 6 primary.
And the appointee will be the winner of the three-way Republican primary.
The 87th covers Jackson, Vinton and Gallia counties and parts of Lawrence and Ross.
Representative John Carey resigned effective January 1 to take a job at Shawnee State University and the House Republican Caucus was expected to pick a successor.
But now Batchelder says he wants to let voters decide for themselves.
However, he also wants to fill the vacancy on a short term basis and just released the following statement: " I have been in contact with local officials in (the 87th District) about the possibility of appointing someone to fill (the seat) until mid-March."
He says an announcement on that should be made "in the coming days."
