Sheriff’s deputies were called to the home of Amy and Jack Smathers Monday afternoon by a family member concerned about their well-being.
The couple were found dead in an upstairs bedroom. There was no sign of forced entry.
Evidence suggests the husband died from a suicide by drug overdose. Injuries to the wife have not yet been determined pending autopsy and toxicology reports. Her death is being treated as a homicide with her husband as the sole suspect.
Deputies concluded the Glouster couple were in the process of filing for divorce and the deaths likely were the result of a domestic violence incident.
Authorities said they are waiting for the coroner’s reports to come back before closing the case.
