Golden Rockets complete second half comeback
< < Back to ?p=324486WELLSTON, Ohio (WOUB) — The Lady Buckeyes hit the road to face the Wellston Golden Rockets in their last conference game of the regular season. The Golden Rockets were looking to defend their home court after falling to Nelsonville-York earlier in the season and they did just that. Wellston defeated the Lady Buckeyes 52-49.
The first half had Nelsonville-York written all over it. Airah Lavy led the way with 21 points at half. The Lady Buckeyes had a 26-23 lead at the break.
Into the second half we saw the Golden Rockets make an adjustment on offense, and use their height to their advantage. Lauren Cheatham put on a show, dominating the boards and getting a lot of points in the paint. Wellston regained the lead, going up 38-34 entering the fourth.
The fourth quarter was a nail-biter. It was a tie game with two minutes to go, until Wellston took the lead back with 35 seconds left up three. As time expired Airah Lavy took the game’s final shot, a contested fade-away three, that would go in and out.
Nelsonville-York fell on the road as Cheatham finished the night with 24 points for the Golden Rockets.
Coach Truax spoke about the height disadvantage the girls faced in the conference finale. “We made some adjustments at halftime to try and stop their post play and the size advantage that they have…it presents a challenge.”
The Lady Buckeyes (10-11) will host Logan on Wednesday for their final game of the regular season. While Wellston (9-12) will travel to Athens to face the TVC-Ohio champions.
