Tomcats brandish claws in preparation for District Semi
< < Back to ?p=324798POMEROY, Ohio (WOUB) — The Trimble Tomcats and the Glenwood Tigers met in Pomeroy for a sectional title game on Thursday Evening. The Tigers started strong and held the lead in the first quarter, but once the Tomcats took the lead, Glenwood was never able to get it back. Trimble won 44 to 34 and will advance to the regional semi-final.
The Tigers came out and hit key shots, which put the Tomcats behind the eight ball. Although Trimble took care of the ball in the first, they couldn’t sink their shots. The Tomcats started out in a 1-2-2 defense, but it prevented them from crashing the boards effectively. Glenwood took the first quarter 3 to 9.
In the second quarter Trimble switched to a man defense. This helped the Tomcats to get more rebounds, and it resulted in more lay-ups. Trimble outscored the Tigers in the second and led going into halftime, 22 to 17.
When the Tomcats came out of the locker room, they didn’t have as much energy as they did in the second quarter. Trimble only scored four points in the first three minutes. At the end of the third, Glenwood also was slow to score, and they sat at 24 until a minute into the fourth.
In the last quarter, the Tomcats ran four out and one inside. They slowed the game down, but this led to a couple of turnovers on Trimble’s end. The Tigers tried to catch up, but it was too much ground to gain.
Turnovers have been a bit of a problem throughout the season, and Coach Joe Richards is hopeful the team can clean it up.
“We made some I ain’t gonna lie, we allowed some dumb turnovers in the fourth quarter,” said Richards. “But we’re hoping we’ll fix them in the next five days before we go, and I’m assuming, play Waterford next Thursday night at Wellston and we’ll be ready. That starts tomorrow, though, but we’re celebrating tonight somewhere.”
Next Thursday the Trimble Tomcats and the Waterford Wildcats will battle to move on to the district final in Wellston.
