Underclassmen Lead Charge In Tomcats’ Turnaround

The 2011/2012 Trimble Tomcats season is the classic example of the comeback.
A surprising twist to the Tomcats’ season has a once deflated team believing again and the ones leading the charge may be the real surprise.
Losing every single contest in their first 12 games, some of the lady Tomcats admittedly had no hope.
But after winning four of their last seven games including upset wins against Belpre and Wahama, Trimble has a new outlook on the season.
Thanks in part to some of the youngest players on the team, the Tomcats’ youth has given the team new life.
“The freshman really came up and surprised me because they were real unconfident at the beginning of the season,” junior guard Demi Moore said. “Some of them were on JV and they really stepped up and they’re probably the hardest working people on the team.”
Not only has their contribution made an impact on the court with their play, but leadership and off-the-court demeanor have been big factors as well.
“The two Tia’s and Trista has really picked things up for this team and it’s kind of like they’re the leaders and they’re freshman and sophomores,” head coach Dave Richards said. “The impact that the younger players have had is tremendous.”
From starting the season on the JV squad, barely out of junior high to hitting the game winning shot against Belpre, freshman forward Trista Lackey is the epitome of the Tomcats’ turnaround.
“When I started I was nervous cause I had just come from junior high and it’s way different now cause it’s way faster,” Lackey said. “Going from, in middle school, being the hero to coming up and being a little freshman; it’s so different.”
Now at 4-15 on the season, Trimble will look to finish out the season strong with a win in their final game.
The Tomcats will hit the road and face Waterford, the seventh ranked team in the state.
Timble lost to the Wildcats by 48 points earlier in the season.
