Write-in candidate for Athens County treasurer Dawn Deputy promises an open-door policy for community concerns
< < Back to ?p=334302ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — This year’s race for Athens County treasurer looks a bit different. Independent write-in Dawn Deputy is one of the two candidates running.
Deputy describes herself as a wife, mother, grandmother, dog mom and entrepreneur.
As a part of the community who has never held elective office, Deputy said if elected treasurer she will make it a priority to listen to anyone with questions or concerns. She plans to do this through an open-door policy.
“If you want to talk to me please stick your head in and say, ‘Hey Dawn, can we have a few minutes of your time?’ I’ll be more than happy to give you my time,” Deputy said.
Deputy is running against Democrat Taylor Sappington, who is the Nelsonville city auditor.
Along with the open-door policy, Deputy talked about hosting meetings for anyone of all ages to learn the importance of money management.
Deputy is the treasurer for The Plains Fire Department and has a degree in accounting. With this experience, Deputy said she has the experience needed for the job.
“By already having some of that knowledge of how nonprofit organizations and accounting happens and how you have to address it, I think that will be one of the things that help us because that is what my degree is in,” Deputy said.
As a write-in candidate, Deputy has been doing everything she can to spread her name throughout the community. She has put up hundreds of signs throughout the county to get her name out there. She’s also created flyers with step-by-step instructions on how to put her name down on the ballot.
“I’ve given them out, I’ve done door knocking and left door hangers if they are not home. I mean, I’m just really trying to get my name out there,” Deputy said.
Early voting ends Nov. 3, two days before Election Day. If you are registered, you can check online at the Athens Board of Elections to see where you can vote.
