Women’s Basketball: Benson Wins MAC East Award
< < Back to womens-basketball-benson-wins-mac-east-awardAfter scoring 19 points and pulling down seven rebounds against Ball State on Saturday, Tenishia Benson is named the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division's Women's Basketball Player of the Week. Benson was also Scholar Athlete of the Week on December 15th, bringing her award total for the season to two.
The red-shirt senior shot 80 percent from the field against the Cardinals, leading both teams offensively. She had three steals, helping the Bobcats to force 22 turnovers for the day. Benson is only 16 points away from scoring 1,000 points in her career. Benson is currently leading the Bobcats, scoring 14.5 points per game. She is also averaging 6.6 rebounds per game, and averages 81.7 percent from the free throw line.
Benson's contributions were part of an overall excellent offensive performance from the Bobcats against the Cardinals. Ohio shot 30-50 from the field Saturday, which is the highest percentage the 'Cats have shot all season. It is also currently the second highest shooting percentage by a MAC team during the 2011-12 season. Ohio has not shot that well since 2001, when it went 33-of-44 for 75 percent, in a 97-87 win over Tennessee-Martin.
If Benson scores 16 or more points in Ohio's next game against Akron, the accomplishment may have a hometown feeling for Benson, as she is a Akron native. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
