ATHENS, Ohio (WOUB) — Ohio Hockey (2-0-0) is starting its season undefeated after the weekend series sweep against Oswego State (2-4-0). Nolan Abraham was one of the stars Saturday night with his four point performance. It was the same story in net for the Bobcats, with Scott Bird earning his first win and shutout of the season.

The offense was strong for Ohio early in the first and Luc Reeve would once again be the first player to score just three minutes in with the assist from Laker Aldridge. Oswego had a more concerted effort following the first goal but were outmatched when Nolan Abraham found the back of the net with a seeing eye shot that flew right past Ben Di Fiore, 2-0. Less than a minute later Laker Aldridge would score his second of the weekend and force Oswego to make a goalie change.

The Bobcats offense showed no signs of slowing down and with Jason Loricco now in net, the Lakers were working to keep the deficit at three. Tommy Kloepfer would score his first goal of the season with a shot that sent Loricco’s water bottle flying, 4-0.

The second period was a similar story for the Oswego team that struggled to exit their zone and had a limited number of chances. Drake Albers gave his share of gold finding the back of the net with the help of Mathieu Ovaert and Abraham, 5-0. A minute later Reeve would score his second of the night extending the Bobcat lead to six.

The third period was even more energetic than the first two with both teams scrapping constantly after the whistle. The Bobcats weren’t done scoring yet, Abraham would sneak one past the goalie for the second time on the night, 7-0. Noah Holt decided he wanted to join in on the fun scoring Ohio’s eighth goal.

A couple untimely penalties from the Bobcats would give the Lakers a chance to break Bird’s shutout and score their first goal of the series. However, the Ohio penalty kill was not going down without a fight and managed to kill the four minute penalty.

Ovaert rounded out the scoring tallying the ninth goal and his first of the year. Ohio chased the second Lakers goalie from the crease and John McAndrew would finish the game in net without giving up a goal.

Ohio Head Coach, Barry Schutte, spoke post-game about his thoughts on opening weekend.

“I was really happy with tonight and obviously any time you can sweep a team that’s a good thing,” Schutte said. “That’s difficult to do when you play a top 25 team. I thought we played really well. Everyone contributed and we stuck to our game and our level.”

Oswego State travels to Stony Brook University next weekend to take on the Sea Wolves. While the Ohio Bobcats start their road trip against Purdue Northwestern.
