Athens County residents now have two fewer places to dispose of storm debris in the wake of severe weather earlier this month.

The Athens County Public Information Officers Network has announced the closing of debris drop-off stations located in Athens and Trimble Townships.

Previously, four locations were available.

The Athens Township site is being used for highway crews only and Trimble Township site is closed due to capacity.

Stations located in Dover and Alexander Township are still open.

Debris Management Coordinator Mike Cooper says he is happy to see people using them.

"I think people made good use of them. We were fortunate in that most of the debris that was generated from this event was leafy vegetation, tree limbs and things of that nature. There was not a lot of structural damage from this storm so we didn't deal with a lot of construction demolition debris."

Cooper also wanted to remind citizens that dumping on Poston Road is unauthorized.

The site was previously used a couple years ago for tornado debris but is now closed.

Cooper says anyone caught dumping in an unauthorized site will be cited for open dumping or littering.
