Rising Cost Of Hay Forces Many To Give Up Animals
< < Back to rising-cost-hay-forces-many-give-animalsHorse-rescue operations in Ohio say they have been inundated with requests from people who can no longer care for their animals and need to give them up.
Part of the problem is the rising cost of hay, which as not fared well during the unusually dry, hot summer. Some owners can't afford to feed their horses anymore.
Victoria Goss operates the nonprofit Last Chance Corral in Athens. She says she's turned away dozens of horses because her stables are already full.
She said monetary donations have declined lately, and high prices for hay add to the financial strain.
Goss says caring for a horse costs at least $1,000 a year, and fewer people are able to take on that burden.
