The Wellston Rockets defeated the Rock Hill Redmen at home on Friday by the final score of 63-29, as Wellston’s running game came up big for the Rockets.  Wellston running backs Noah Massie and Cain Wolford were huge for the Rockets win against the Redmen, with Jake Waldron contributing from the quarterback position as well.

Wellston shook off a rough start, throwing interception on their first drive, allowing the Redmen to start deep in Rocket territory, which would end with a touchdown by Rock Hill running back Jacob Malone. Wellston also had a botched snap on a punt in the first quarter allowing Rock Hill great field position again, but they would cause a turnover on downs to get the ball back.

After those two turnovers, Wellston finished off the half by giving up just one touchdown and scoring four, all on the ground.  Two of those touchdowns were scored by Massie, one from 60 yards out and the other from two yards out.  The other two touchdowns were contributed from Walder and Wolford.

Before the game, former head football coach Bill Fyffe was honored for his contributions as both a coach and a teacher.  Fyffe coached starting in 1985 and resigned in 1990 after recording a winning record in his final season, while notching three wins against rival Jackson.

Wellston enters conference play with just two wins, but it’s possible that this win will propel the Rockets with some confidence and momentum for them to make a run in the TVC-Ohio.  Next week’s game against Athens is a big test for them to gauge where they are in the conference.
