Ohio Falls in OT to Central Michigan
< < Back to ?p=7433Ohio Field Hockey dropped its seventh game of the season this afternoon, on the road against conference-foe Central Michigan, 2-1. This weakened the team’s record to 8-7 heading into its final regular season game at Miami. Ohio got its only offensive contributions from Kristine Gegas and Laura Mastro, while Brittany Walker held up her end of the bargain at goalie.
Kristine Gegas scored the lone goal for the Bobcats, which tied the game at one late in the first half. Gegas’ goal, assisted by Mastro, was vital to squashing the early momentum that the Chippewas had gained.
As soon as the game was knotted at one, the Bobcats were ignited and displayed an inspired effort at both ends of the field. Defense has become Ohio’s identity, now allowing only five goals in its last six games.
It is no coincidence that Ohio has made its case for being one of the elite teams in the nation during this six game stretch, despite this afternoon’s loss. The Bobcats are defensively sound and have now begun to take advantage of opportunities at pivotal moments in games.
Ohio is 4-2 in its last six games, with its only losses coming at the hands of No. 20 Michigan State and MAC opponent Central Michigan. Even in a loss at Michigan State, Bobcat goalie Brittany Walker had delivered her third shutout in four games thru regulation, only to surrender the lone goal to the Spartans in overtime. As for this afternoon at Central Michigan, it was more of the same.
Offensively, Ohio scored just once, which was not enough for Walker to secure a Bobcat victory.
Walker allowed only one goal during regulation, but was defeated yet again in overtime. Regardless, she has been nothing short of solid down the stretch and even Ohio’s most recent loss was no exception.
The Bobcats travel to Oxford, Ohio, to take on the Miami RedHawks on Saturday, October 27 in the regular season finale. Ohio looks to stay solid entering the conference tournament, while also seeking its 9th win of the regular season.
