Birth of the Cool: A Tribute to Miles Davis
October 22, 2017 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
FreeThe School of Music presents the Faculty Chamber Music Recital, Sunday, October 22, starting at 4 p.m., at ARTS/West. Several music faculty, with guest artist James Moore on trumpet, will celebrate the 60th anniversary of Miles Davis’ album “Birth of the Cool,” by performing portions of the groundbreaking album. This event is free and public.
“Miles Davis and his associates changed the course of jazz (or music for the matter) many times through his career. “Birth of the Cool” is one these moments. The album broke with the paradigms of jazz at the time by changing aesthetics and approach. I would highlight the larger orchestration, innovative harmonies and a chamber music approach,” said Lucas Borges, assistant professor of trombone.
The Faculty Chamber Recital occurs once every semester, showcasing faculty collaborating with each other in various formations and ensembles. This semester’s focus on jazz was inspired by the 60th anniversary of this pioneering album, a project that mixed elements of classical chamber music and jazz, which sets the stage for an especially potent kind of collaboration.
Performers from the School of Music:
Matt James on alto saxophone, Charles Smith on French horn, Lucas Borges on trombone, Jason Roland Smith on tuba, Roger Braun on drums, Sean Parsons on piano.
