Ohio was unable to mount a comeback Sunday afternoon in Akron, but the women’s swimming and diving team still had a great performance at the Zippy Invitational.
Laurin Williams started the day off for Ohio by winning the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 17:02.22, winning the event by more than seven seconds. In the 200-yard backstroke, Anastasia Bocharnikova finished in third place, but unfortunately for her and the Bobcats, the top two finishers were from Toledo, whom the Bobcats were trying to track down on the final day.
In the 100-yard freestyle, Lauren Funk claimed second touching the wall with a final time of 50.66, while Katey Brooks took ninth to snatch up two top ten finishes for the Bobcats in the event.
The 200-yard breaststroke was really the back breaker for Ohio, as they watched Toledo claim five of the top 10 spots in the event. Megan Davis was able to take seventh place in the event for Ohio. Michelle Gasior swam the 200-yard butterfly in a time of 2:04.60, which was good for a third place finish. The 400-yard freestyle relay team consisting of Haley Clark, Funk, Bocharnikova and Brooks swam an impressive race taking second place. Their time of 3:25.87 was only .8 seconds behind the leader.
Ohio scored 1,211 points on the weekend, while Toledo won with 1,697. The women will be back in action Dec. 12 at Denison.
