Reports are surfacing throughout the region and the state regarding a scam targeting recipients of Ohio's Home Energy Assistance Program.

The Washington County Sheriff's office reported that in several cases, a caller phoning from a 1-800 number is claiming to be a representative of The Energy Assistance Program.

The scammer informed the victim that they were awarded extra assistance due to the recent cold weather.

The caller then requested the victim's banking information and sometimes the social security number so that the extra funds can be deposited into their account.

Residents are being urged not to provide banking or personal information.

Anyone who believes they have received such a solicitation should contact law enforcement immediately.
