The River City Players are kicking off their summer season with the musical comedy Nunsense. The production will run for two weekends, with performances on June 5, 6 and 13 at 7 p.m. and June 14 at 2 p.m. in the Middleport Village Hall.

The long-running Off-Broadway musical by Dan Goggin tells the story of five of the 19 surviving Little Sisters of Hoboken, a one-time missionary order that ran a leper colony on an island south of France.

After discovering that their cook has accidentally killed the other 52 residents of the convent with her tainted vichyssoise, the sisters start a greeting card company to raise funds for the burials. But after the assumed success of the greeting card scheme, the Reverend Mother buys a plasma TV for the convent, leaving no money to pay for the last four burials. With the deceased nuns in the deep freeze, the sisters decide to stage a variety show to raise the funds.

Under the direction of Nathan Jeffers, the cast consists of Mother Superior Mary Regina, a former circus performer with a love of the spotlight (played by Amy Perrin); the competitive but dignified second-in-command, Sister Mary Hubert (Julie Howard); Streetwise Sister Robert Anne from Brooklyn (Renee Stewart); Novice Mary Leo, who is determined to be the world’s first ballerina nun (Veronica Grimm); and wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia, who lost her memory when a crucifix fell on her head (Dixie Sayre).

In addition to the side-splitting convent humor, Nunsense features song selections including “Nunsense is Habit Forming,” “Tackle that Temptation with a Time-Step,” “We’ve Got to Clean Out the Freezer,” “I Could Have Gone to Nashville,” and “Holier Than Thou.”

Tickets are $10 and will be available at the door. For more on this production and other upcoming shows, visit www.rivercityplayers.org or follow River City Players on Facebook and Instagram.
