There's a new way to get emergency public information in the Athens and Nelsonville areas.

On Saturday, The Athens County Emergency Management Agency debuted a new low power AM radio system, designed to broadcast emergency information and safety messages to local residents.

According to a news release, the radio unit will also be utilized by Hocking College to broadcast general student information, traffic and parking information.

It is also expected to be used during the upcoming Ohio Smoked Meat and BBQ Festival in Nelsonville and the Athens Halloween Block Party.

The 6 minute 30 second sound loop will be playing on 1610 AM, which has a broadcast radius of about 3-5 miles, depending on terrain and weather conditions.

The AM radio system purchased using funding from the Department of Homeland Security.
