Information has been posted on Virginia Tech's website that there have been numerous reports of sounds identified as gunshots and suspicious activity on campus.
Officials say these recent reports have been investigated and are unfounded.
The suspect remains on the loose.
Several law enforcement agencies are on scene to assist.
Everyone is still asked to stay where you are and secure your surroundings.
Update 2:00 pm
A Virginia Tech police officer is dead after a traffic stop on campus this morning.
According to a news release on the Virginia Tech website, shortly after noon today, the officer stopped a vehicle on campus during a routine traffic stop in the Coliseum parking lot near McComas Hall.
Officials say during the traffic stop, the officer was shot and killed and there were witnesses to this shooting.
Witnesses told police the shooter fled on foot heading toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive.
At that parking lot, a second person was found. That person is also deceased.
The status of the shooter is unknown.
The campus community is still being told to stay inside and visitors are being told not come to campus.

The Virginia Tech website now says that a police officer has been shot.
There also may be a second victim.
Everyone is still being told to stay indoors.
There are reports of shots fired on Virginia's Tech's campus.
An active campus alert is posted on the school's website with information about a suspect in the shooting.
The shooter is described a white male wearing gray sweatpants, a gray hat with a neon green brim, a maroon hoodie and a backpack.
Everyone on campus is being advised to stay indoors.
