Superintendent Recommends Closing Chauncey Elementary School
< < Back to superintendent-recommends-closing-chauncey-elementary-schoolAthens City Schools Superintendent Carl Martin confirmed he is recommending Chauncey Elementary School close its doors at the end of this school year.
Martin says the decision he is making is based on enrollment figures and finances. "Our state aid has been cut drastically over the past couple of years," said Martin. "We've reduced our budget over $500,000 last year and we have to reduce our budget at least a million dollars going into next year. At the same time I've looked at all the enrollments and student population has declined. I feel that it's necessary for us to consolidate our elementary schools into four buildings."
Martin says if his recommendation is approved, students from Chauncey will be assigned to The Plains Elementary next fall.
Letters informing parents of the recommendation, which Martin will make at Thursday's school board meeting, will be sent home with students today.
The Board of Education will hold a public meeting January 11th to discuss the recommendation further.
