A former Parkersburg police officer convicted of hitting a suspect faces up to a year in jail.

28-year-old Joshua Adam Vensel pleaded guilty to battery Thursday in Wood County Circuit Court. Sentencing is set for Aug. 23.

Mayor Bob Newell says Vensel submitted his resignation Thursday morning.

Under a plea agreement, Vensel must surrender his law enforcement certification and he won't be allowed to seek employment as a law enforcement officer.

He had been a member of the Parkersburg Police Department for seven years.

Vensel admitted hitting Jerry Seabolt with his fist at the Wood County Holding Facility last October.
