Kroger’s Voluntarily Reducing Electric Use

Kroger’s Columbus Division announced Thursday morning that it is reducing lighting in its 125 stores by one-third to help preserve energy during the current power crisis.
The Columbus Division includes the Ohio Valley up to Wheeling, Steubenville/Wintersville and over to Portsmouth. It includes Athens and the bulk of WOUB’s coverage area.
Kroger stores normally reduce lighting by one-third from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. but Kroger has voluntarily extended that reduction to 24 hours a day through this Sunday, according to a release issued today by Matt Hobart, Kroger’s facility engineering manager for the Columbus Division.
Hobart also said that the reduction would be extended if necessary. Kroger is working closely with the electrical power companies.
“Crews are still working hard to restore power to those who lost it last Friday,” Hobart said. “This is the least we can do to help conserve energy, and reduce the strain on the system.”
Hobart reassures customers that the stores will be safe and there will still be plenty of lighting for people to shop.
“This just reduces the energy burden on the system while crews work to turn the lights back on around Ohio,” Hobart noted.
Signs will be placed in the participating Kroger stores alerting customers to the temporary change.
