Athens Public Will Be Able To Comment On Housing Plan
< < Back to athens-public-will-be-able-comment-housing-planA redesigned Athens housing project will be the subject of a public hearing next month.
The Madison Heights Subdivision is proposed for a roughly two acre site off East State Street, where the Athens Flower Shop is now located.
Diversified Properties has submitted plans to the city for the project and the Planning Commission has scheduled a public hearing for August 15.
The plans call for construction of seven houses.
The plans list the estimated cost at $1,750,000.
Mayor Paul Wiehl says at first glance, it looks like a good project.
"I think there's probably a need for this type of housing in the city," he says. "This would fit somebody who's a professional, someone who doesn't want to maintain a lot of yardage, who wants to be closer to town and be able to walk to and from work, assuming they're an employee of the university."
The Planning Commission approved the project previously as a Planned Unit Development for condominiums.
The Commission will need to approve it again because the condo concept has been dropped.
