Library Hosting Exhibit, Reception for Athens Artist
< < Back to library-hosting-exhibit-reception-athens-artistThroughout January, Athens Public Library patrons have enjoyed Recent and Abstract, a month-long exhibit of John McVicker’s paintings.
Now, as the show comes to a close, local residents will have the opportunity to meet the artist this Wednesday at the library.
McVicker, who lives in Athens, is appreciative of the feedback he’s received since the exhibit went up on Jan. 5.
“The comments have been fairly positive…in the guest book I put out at the library, on Facebook and in person,” he said. “People often comment on the colorfulness of it all, which suits me fine.”
McVicker added that he attempted to create a feeling of movement with his recent paintings, which “emphasize color and rhythm.”
His work has been exhibited in Boston and New York City galleries and is currently being featured in collections in Switzerland, France and the United States.
Recently retired from Ohio University, McVicker plans to keep busy in 2013. Along with an upcoming exhibit in Nelsonville, he’s looking forward to a summer show in Belgium with the composer-musician John Zorn.
“John’s an old pal and included me in his online gallery, Obsessions Collective,” he explained. “In mid-July, I’m part of a group show in Ghent, Belgium, which is honoring John. It’s part of the Ghent Jazz Festival. Apart from that, gotta get more pictures painted.”
The Recent and Abstract reception takes place Wednesday, Jan. 30 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Athens Public Library, located at 30 Home Street. Refreshments, as well as selected pieces, reproductions and greeting cards, will be available.
