ARTS/West is turning up the volume this weekend.

The west-side venue, which is hosting the annual Athens Rock Camp for Girls, will present a concert this Saturday featuring some of the area’s newest rock stars.

The camp began Sunday, July 7 and will continue through this Saturday’s concert, scheduled for 7 p.m.

The show will feature the debut performances of the bands Smolder, Necessary Redundancy, Fading Grey, Macintosh and Soul Takers.

The Athens Rock Camp for Girls builds self-esteem through music creation and performance. By providing workshops and technical training, they create leadership opportunities, cultivate a supportive community of peers and mentors, and encourage social change and the development of life skills.

Through community support and monetary donations, there is a committment to keeping the camp as low-cost as possible to enable participation for individuals from all economic backgrounds.

At the camp, girls form bands, learn to play instruments, write songs, and at the end of the week, perform a show. Various workshops are also offered and is staffed only by a variety of volunteers.

This will be the third year in a row that Athens Rock Camp for Girls has taken a week out of the summer to provide this service to the young girls of the Athens community.

ARTS/West is located at 132 West State Street in Athens. There will be a $5-10 donation at the door.
