Mount Vernon Nazarene Bests Rio 4-1 In Opener
< < Back to mount-vernon-nazarene-bests-rio-4-1-openerThe Rio Grande women’s soccer team came into its first game against Mount Vernon Nazarene University with self-imposed high expectations, but failed to fulfill them. The RedStorm dropped the contest 4-1 to the Cougars.
Within the first eight minutes into the match, Mount Vernon’s Casey Apple scored to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead. Throughout the first half, the RedStorm struggled to find the net and keep the Cougars out of it. Mount Vernon led 2-0 at halftime.
The Cougars struck gold a third time in the 60th minute when Dayna Setzler scored before Apple netted her second goal of the day and Mount Vernon’s fourth of the contest in the 73rd minute as icing on the proverbial cake.
The RedStorm’s Karla Garn scored from a corner kick in the final 10 minutes to put the Rio on the board, but it was far too little far too late.
“After our goal we found the fire,” said Rachel Hoffman, “but it was a little too late.”
The first loss now behind them, the RedStorm have a second chance to capture a victory this Saturday against Point Park University in their home opener at Evan E. Davis Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
