< < Back to pioneers-lose-second-straight-2-1-wittenbergThe Marietta Pioneers suffered another tough loss Friday night as the Wittenberg Tigers defeated the Pioneers 2-1 on a goal that came with only one second left on the clock at the Wilmington Kiwanis Classic.
The winning goal came off the foot of Kevin Bond on a free kick from the top of the box. This is the Pioneers’ second straight difficult loss as they fell to St. Vincent College (Pa.) by a score of 2-1 in extra time in their previous game.
Marietta took an early 1-0 lead when junior Wesley Riley scored his third goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 14th minute. Wittenberg tied the game in the 37th minute on a goal from Andre Lorenz.
Wittenberg totaled 14 shots in the game, including seven shots on goal. Marietta only had seven shots in the game. All of them were shots on goal, however.
Marietta (1-2) will face the Birmingham-Southern Panthers (3-0) Saturday. Wittenberg (2-2) plays the Wilmington Quakers (Ohio) Saturday.
