Ohio States Receives $18.7 Million For Tobacco Research Center

Ohio State University is getting $18.7 million to establish a tobacco research center aimed at helping federal officials regulate tobacco products.
The National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration say Ohio State's center is one of 14 receiving federal funds under the new Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science program.
The center will look at biological, psychological, economic and public health implications related to tobacco use. It will also study industry marketing of products to consumers.
Federal officials say the centers will help ensure that FDA regulation of tobacco is based on sound and relevant scientific evidence. The National Cancer Institute will administer the Ohio State funding.
Federal officials say tobacco continues to be the leading cause of preventable death and disease.
